Apple's Failed "Hockey Puck" Mouse
Originally released alongside the iMac G3 in 1998, Apple’s so-called “hockey puck” mouse broke from convention with its perfectly round form. Designed to complement the bold, translucent design of the iMac, the mouse prioritized visual novelty over user comfort — and quickly became known for its poor ergonomics and awkward usability.
Design Lesson
This is a case study in how aesthetics alone aren’t enough. It reminds us that innovation in form must be supported by function, comfort, and user awareness. As designers, we’re not just shaping objects, we’re shaping experiences. Even the most iconic brands can misstep when user needs take a back seat to visual experimentation.
Design Response
Shifted away from the original circular shape to improve ergonomics and usability
Removed cord to reflect modern wireless functionality
Maintained the iconic transparent shell as a nod to the iMac G3 era
Refined surface transitions for a smoother, sculptural form
Balanced visual weight and curvature for better comfort and proportion
