Sprout

Nourishing the seedlings of the future.

Overview

Sprout is a team project in education and spatial design, created to address the developmental challenges children face in outdated learning environments. Developed alongside two teammates, the concept reimagines the modern classroom as a dynamic, modular space centered on flexibility, sensory engagement, and emotional growth.

“Schools with poor space layouts can stunt a child's cognitive development by 25%.”
— Danish Kurani, Design Activist

Core Insight

Modern classrooms often lack the adaptability, ergonomics, and stimulation children need to thrive. Our goal was to design a space that supports the whole child — cognitively, socially, and emotionally.

Attention Span

The length of time for which a person is able to concentrate mentally on a particular activity.

16-30 min.

Is the average attention span of children ages 7-10 years.

How can we keep their attention?

Remove static seating and introduce a modular system.

Apply visually appealing design.

Incorporate play throughout the classroom.

Design Principles

Flexibility: Modular furniture and layout options to support various activities and teaching styles.

Efficiency: Durable, sustainable materials with long-term usability.

Ergonomics: Scaled to children's bodies and developmental needs.

Key Features

Playful Complexity: Balanced visual stimulation that enhances learning without overstimulation.

Interactive Technology

Soft Forms

Playful Environment

Storage Space

Enrichment Wall

Teacher Area

  • Improved attention span (interactive learning boosts it by 2–3×).

  • Increased confidence and autonomy at a young age.

  • Strengthened collaborative and communication skills

  • Encouraged conflict resolution and sense of purpose.

Steve Jobs School | Amsterdam, Netherlands

Moodboard

Establishing design language.

Concept Development

Variation of sketches exploring form and function.

CAD Models

Using Rhino

Sprout challenged us to think beyond aesthetics and focus on the emotional and cognitive impact of spatial design. The project emphasized the power of intentional environments in shaping how children learn, interact, and grow, reinforcing our belief that good design can nurture both development and purpose from an early age.
