Mas Caché

A study in concealed mechanics and modular transformation.

Overview

Mas Caché is a dual-purpose furniture concept designed to showcase mechanical innovation through minimal form. Built around the push-latch mechanism, the piece explores how tactile interaction can activate hidden functionality — all while preserving a clean, sculptural silhouette.

Created in SolidWorks and finalized in Photoshop, this project emphasizes mechanical precision, modular engineering, and material contrast in both public and private contexts.

Core Challenge

Can an everyday object become dynamic through a single mechanical action?

Engineering the Concept

  • How hidden mechanisms can enhance user experience.

  • How multi-functionality can be achieved without clutter.

  • How to integrate engineering thinking into soft, elegant design.

The result is a modular ottoman that uses a concealed push-latch system to reveal either a bookshelf or charging hub, depending on the context.

Engineering the Experience

The magic is in the movement. Using a spring-loaded push-latch mechanism, the top of the ottoman lifts smoothly to reveal a cylindrical module. Careful attention was paid to tolerance, fit, and stability, ensuring that the motion feels both intuitive and precise.

Mechanical Considerations:

  • Push-latch activation modeled with multi-body part separation.

  • Internal structure supports weight without impeding motion.

  • Mechanism hidden within upholstered or poly shell.

  • Hub rotation tested in CAD to allow ergonomic access.

The mechanism became the soul of the piece — driving its duality and function.

NODO

Concept

A black gloss finish surrounds a tech-forward core: a rotating charging module that rises on demand. Designed for airports, lounges, and lobbies, the Nodo combines engineering clarity with public durability. Named Nodo — Spanish for “node” — this piece embodies connectivity, serving as a sleek and functional hub for high-traffic spaces.

Functionality

  • Pop-up charging ports (USB & AC)

  • Seamless integration of solar-capable clean energy

  • Reflective surfaces to highlight form + interaction

  • Rotational access for communal use

NIDO

Concept

In contrast, the home version reveals a hidden bookcase, making it ideal for quiet spaces like libraries or bedrooms. Named Nido, Spanish for “nest”, it reflects warmth, comfort, and retreat. Using the same core mechanism, this version is softened through its CMF: warm wood, creamy textiles, and curved geometry.

Functionality

  • Push-to-reveal internal bookshelf

  • Modular assembly with wood grain alignment

  • Structural balance between soft exterior and rigid core

  • Hidden fasteners modeled for real-world fabrication potential

Here, the mechanical becomes emotional — supporting comfort without compromising logic.

Material & Sustainability

Mas Caché also served as a chance to explore material performance in relation to moving parts. The design balances softness and structure while choosing durable, sustainable materials that suit their context.

Engineering Focus

CAD Execution in SolidWorks:

  • Multi-body assemblies with internal mechanism modeling.

  • Controlled exploded views for production clarity.

  • Movement simulation and alignment of rotating parts.

  • Ergonomic modeling based on posture and interaction zones.

Visualization in Photoshop:

  • Environment context (airports, homes).

  • Shadow and silhouette for user scale.

  • Composite layouts to communicate use cases and functionality.
